Cyclist Leading a Race Taken Out by a Fan Near the Finish Line

Why did the fan cross the road right in front of the cyclist?  To get to the other side?

Who knows what was going through this fan's mind as she decided to cross the road in front of a cyclist who was leading a race this weekend.  Judging from the impact of the collision she doesn't remember either.

What we do know is she took out the leader of the race just as he smelled the finish line.  We also know the two ended up in the hospital following the spectacular crash.

This is how "c" words get spread.  I bet these two didn't have any plans of taking a trip to the hospital when they woke up that morning.  It seemed like an accident waiting to happen.

Why are there no barriers?  How are people allowed to cross the street right in front of the cyclists?  Was the cyclist flagged for a hit on a defenseless player?  A lot of questions here...
