Cincinnati Reds rookie Tyler Callihan’s promising debut in the big leagues took a heartbreaking turn during Monday night’s matchup against the Atlanta Braves. In just his fourth MLB appearance, the 24-year-old infielder suffered a devastating injury that could sideline him for much of the season.
The incident occurred in the third inning when Callihan chased down a fly ball hit by Atlanta slugger Matt Olson. In a full-speed effort to make a highlight-reel catch, Callihan crashed into the outfield wall. The collision not only jarred the ball loose—allowing Olson to circle the bases for an inside-the-park home run—but also resulted in a broken left forearm for the young Reds player.
Reds manager Terry Francona confirmed after the game that Callihan sustained multiple fractures in his arm and will require surgery. He is scheduled to return to Cincinnati on Tuesday for a full evaluation and to undergo the necessary procedure.
Despite the severity of the injury, there’s a glimmer of hope. Dr. David Chao, a noted sports medicine specialist, shared that a return later in the season remains possible, depending on the success of the surgery and the pace of Callihan’s recovery.
The timing is especially tough for Callihan, who had only recently been called up from Triple-A Louisville. He was making the most of his opportunity, having notched his first major league hit and RBI just two days prior.
For a player who was just starting to make his mark in the majors, the injury is a cruel setback. But with youth and determination on his side, the Reds and their fans will be hoping this is only a temporary pause in what could be a bright MLB career.
